KUCHING: The Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) welcomes the initiative taken by Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing to promote Bak Kut Teh as a tourist attraction.

SPA noted that it is heartening to see that many of the people from China, who plan to visit their relatives in Malaysia, consider Bak Kut Teh a must-try dish during their stay.

“We believe that the recent criticism directed to Tiong was unfounded. Tiong is diligently working to boost tourism and attract visitors to Malaysia, which ultimately contributes to the growth of our economy.

“However, there have been dissenting voices internally, particularly from a leader within our Unity Government.

“We urge that if this leader has nothing constructive to contribute, they should refrain from unnecessary commentary,” SPA said in a statement.

It pointed out that it’s essential to acknowledge the historical significance of Sabah and Sarawak in the formation of Malaysia.

“Without their inclusion, Malaysia as we know it would not exist. Therefore, leaders in Malaya must demonstrate respect for the cultures and traditions of Sabah and Sarawak,” it said.

It stressed that in Sarawak and Sabah, variations of Bak Kut Teh such as Prawns Kut Teh, Crabs Kut Teh, Beef Kut Teh, and Chicken Kut Teh (Chi Kut Teh) are prevalent alongside the traditional Bak Kut Teh.

“The term ‘Bak’ in Hokkien refers to meat. Embracing this diverse culinary heritage is crucial for Malaysia’s renewal and fostering inclusivity among its people.

“When discussing national heritage, it’s essential to incorporate Sabah and Sarawak; otherwise, it only represents the heritage of West Malaysia.

“We strongly support Tiong in his initiative of promoting Bak Ku Teh to global tourists making Malaysia better known in the world,” it said.
