KUCHING: The proposed amendments to the Sarawak Buildings Ordinance 1994 are expected to be tabled in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) next year to ensure it remains relevant and able to serve the current needs.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said considering the outdated nature of the existing ordinance, dating back to 1994, some amendments would be necessary to enhance the designs and safety of buildings and houses in the state.

“We need new ordinance to address the present needs and dynamic situations; for instance, climate change, extreme weather and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution are among the factors that need to be taken into account in drafting new laws,” he said.

In addition, he said, the laws need to be in line with the Sarawak Government’s aspiration to transform Sarawak into a developed and high-income economy.

“So, I want to (rush) table it next year,” he added.

Dr Sim, who is also the Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister was speaking at the launch of the Design Forum held in conjunction of the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia Sarawak Chapter (PAMSC) Design Festival 2023 at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Community Hall here today (Nov 18).

He also noted that the Sarawak Building Ordinance 1994 is Sarawak’s autonomy, which aims to protect the interest of the state and its people.

“With that, we can introduce and implement new and good policies for our people and relevant with the development progress and current needs,” he added.

It was previously reported that the proposed amendments to the ordinance have been studied and are in the process of consultation with experts.

Apart from that, the Sarawak Attorney General’s Office (SAG) will need to conduct a final review to ensure there is no conflict with Federal or other laws.

Also present were the MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, PAMSC Chairman Noraini Narodden, deputy chairman Wong Ming Ming, organising chairman Wee Hii Min and other committee members and participants.
