SIBU: Members of the public are urged to participate in the 2019 Earth Hour by switching off non-essential light for one hour from 8.30pm on March 30.

Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 encourages individuals, communities and businesses to switch off their non-essential lights for one hour on a specific day towards the end of March as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

This event for Sibu will be organised by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) with the support of 12 local Lions Clubs, namely Lions Club of Sibu Dudong, Sibu City, Sungai Merah, Sibu Lanang, Sibu Host, Sibu Pahlawan, Sibu Nangka, Sibu Berjaya, Sibu Mandarin, Sibu Queensway, Sibu Bawang Assan and Sibu Central.

Organising chairperson Kapitan Connie Loh said at a press conference yesterday that the event would take place at Sibu Gateway with the participation of students from primary and secondary schools.

She added there would be a display of recycled crafts by students and a recycled material fashion show at 7pm.

“We want to encourage the people to recycle, and reduce waste, as this will help in environmental protection. As our population grows, waste generation also increases. Therefore, it is important that we learn and build a habit to practise recycling in our daily life,” she said.

SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King will be present to launch the event.
