KUCHING: Purplelily Social Association Kuching spokesperson Suraya Bujang has stressed the importance of prioritising inclusive policies that uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals, irrespective of their background or citizenship status.

In a statement on Thursday (March 7), she urged a shift away from regressive measures, noting the significance of fair and transparent pathways to citizenship and the promotion of integration for social cohesion.

She added that embracing inclusive policies aligns with the principles of ‘Inspire Inclusion’, the theme for International Women’s Day 2024, essential for Malaysia’s progress and prosperity.

“Through collaborative efforts to dismantle obstacles and promote diversity, we endeavour to construct a fairer and more inclusive environment for future generations.”

Expressing concern about potential exclusion and marginalisation resulting from regressive amendments on citizenship, she urged the government to reconsider, pointing out that citizenship is more than a legal status; it’s fundamental to belonging, identity, and participation in the nation’s social, economic, and political life.

Suraya warned that “restricting citizenship rights may lead to increased social tensions and deepen existing divides.”

She noted that such regressive amendments could undermine Malaysia’s commitment to human rights and international standards of equality and non-discrimination.

Furthermore, they may hinder efforts to build a cohesive and harmonious society that celebrates diversity and ensures equal opportunities and treatment under the law.

“As we commemorate International Women’s Day 2024 and contemplate the theme of ‘Inspire Inclusion’, it prompts us to reassert our dedication to fostering a society where every woman is empowered, esteemed, and embraced,” Suraya added.
