KUCHING: The Scouts Association of Malaysia Sarawak branch plans to establish a recreational centre for youths at Jalan Batu Lintang here.

Sarawak Scouts Council president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom said the proposed centre intends to organise youth-centric activities to get youths interested in scouting activities.

“The area next to the scouts headquarters has been cleared up and anything can spring up from that. We are still working out (the plans) with all these very creative young leaders,” he said.

Mawan, who is Pakan assemblyman, told reporters this after officiating at the Scouts Association of Malaysia Sarawak branch Ihya Ramadan programme at its headquarters yesterday (Apr 16).

The construction project of the proposed centre will be completed within six months.

Meanwhile, deputy president of Sarawak Scouts Council Datuk Mohamad Safri Abdillah said there are plans to convert the scouts headquarters for ‘glamping’ (glamorous camping) activities, which is the current trend among young adults.

“Glamping is a new thing and we are talking to some groups on organising glamping activities every weekend.

“At the same time, we want the youths to also experience the scouts’ way of camping and doing activities such as how to tie knots and hold campfires at night.

“So, these are the activities which are in the pipeline,” he added.

During the event, about 24 recipients received cash donations comprising scouts who are ill, family members of the scouts who are categorised as disabled and the less fortunate in conjunction with the month of Ramadan.

The scouts also distributed about 1,000 packets of ‘bubur lambuk’ (savory porridge) to the staff on duty at the Central Police Station, Batu Lintang Fire Brigade and Rescue Station, Darul Ittihaad Mosque Kenyalang, Darul Barakah BDC Mosque, Kuching City Mosque, Anjung Kasih Kuching, SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor hostel, teacher trainees from the institute of Teacher’s Education Batu Lintang Campus and trainees from the Ministry of Health (MoH) Health College in Puncak Borneo.
