KUCHING: Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) had urged members of the public to reject Daesh ideology as it is against the laws of the country.

SCPA president Datuk John Lau said people should lodge police report as and when they encountered strangers approaching them to join the Daesh movement.

“Daesh uses videos to attract those who likes to seek for a supposedly new beginning rather than a revenge. Those who believe in such ideology will join them.

“Daesh operates in urban areas and offers new recruits immediate opportunity to fight for their selfish cause,” he said when commenting on the recent arrest of twelve individuals suspected to be involved with Daesh in the country.

Lau said the public must be watchful if someone tried to recruit them to join their fighter forces.

Lau, who studied and did research on Daesh, said the group is the richest and most violent terrorist group in modern history. It has evolved from a geographically contained insurgent group to a quasi-conventional army with global impact.

“Part of Daesh strategy is to attract foreign fighters. At the end of December 2015, between 27,000 and 31,000 people had travelled to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State and other violent extremist groups from at least 86 countries. 5,000 of them were from Western European countries.

“Daesh will continue calling Muslims to come to their Islamic State and continue to ask those within Western countries to launch attacks within their own countries,” he added.
