SIBU: Members of the public are advised to promptly report any false claims regarding unclaimed funds to the police for further action.

This advisory follows the recent arrest of four individuals, including two civil servants, in connection with the fraudulent withdrawal of over RM175,000 from the eGumis (Electronic Government Unclaimed Money Information System) platform using forged documents.

Sibu OCPD ACP Zulkipli Suhaili also warned the public against using counterfeit documents and identities to make such claims.

“Recently, the district’s Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) has received three reports concerning false claims of unclaimed funds by three different victims.

“All three individuals discovered unclaimed funds after checking the Department of Accountants’ eGumis portal. However, upon initiating the claim process, they found that the funds had already been claimed by unknown individuals. The cumulative loss is RM175,014.89,” he said.

He said that the case is being investigated under Sections 420 and 471 of the Penal Code, for cheating and using forged documents as genuine.

Investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly used false documents such as counterfeit death certificates, probate certificates and affidavits to falsely claim the funds belonging to the victims.

All three victims denied any acquaintance with the suspects who initiated the claims and promptly lodged reports at the police station for further action.

“On April 14 and 15, police successfully arrested four suspects, comprising three men and a woman. The suspects, aged between 29 and 42, have been remanded for three days until April 18 to facilitate the investigations,” he added.

In light of these events, the public is encouraged to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 and to follow the Facebook pages of @CyberCrimeAlertRMP and @JSJKPDRM for further advice and information.
