SIBU: A 23-year-old local restaurant helper lost over RM12,200 to a job scam.

According to Sibu police chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili in a statement yesterday a police report was made by the victim claiming that he was contacted on October 8 by an unknown number through WhatsApp application.

“The victim received a message via WhatsApp application from an unknown number offering a job as a runner for a money lender with a decent salary of RM5,000 per month.

“The victim was attracted by the salary offered and agreed to accept the job offer,” he said.

According to Zulkipli the victim later was asked to make a deposit payment to an account.

“The victim has made a total of 8 transactions in the period from October 8 until October 15 totalling RM12,288.

“The victim began to feel suspicious when he was often asked to make a payment and voiced his desire to cancel his intention to accept the job. However, to do so the victim is required to pay RM10,000 as compensation.

“The victim refused to comply with the request because he suspected that he had been tricked by the scammer,” he said.

Zulkipli advised people not to easily believe any vague job offer, which is advertised on social media promising a good salary.

“The public should always be careful and take appropriate preventive measures so as not to become a victim of such fraudulent activities,” he said.
