KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak Women members should not shy away from showcasing their calibre and talents, or hide behind in the shadow of their male counterparts.

PRS president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum urges them to rise and shine and play active roles in nation building.

“One of the things that the Iban from the longhouses would remember and know is that women are often the ones busy cooking, sitting behind, watching, being satisfied and only eat after the men.

“That should not be the case and they (women) should not allow themselves to be socially suppressed, they should make sure that they are seen and no less capable,” he said to the party’s women wing members during a fundraising dinner at Penview Convention Centre Kuching on Saturday.

Salang said that in line with the International Women’s Day theme – ‘Inspire Inclusion’, he supported and lauded the theme which must include everybody.

He assured that as the party’s president, he would be pushing for the participation of more members in all party activities.

“Because if we look at the current scenario, men tend to hold on to the position maybe not thinking that the women are equally capable or because the women members are not showing leadership interest,” he said.

Hence, Salang called on the party’s women members to rise when opportunities arise and position themselves, understanding that they are seen and recognised and will be invited when opportunity comes.

Meanwhile, PRS Women chief, Datuk Sri Doris Sophia Brodie praised her exco members for their tremendous teamwork in making the event a success.

“The women exco members, they are my pillar of strength and they are actually important people.

“We are one body, and we need to engage with one another, and continue to include women in whatever that we do to build this party,” she said.
