MIRI: A study on using rivers to transport bulky cargo is being proposed to reduce the risk of accidents involving heavily-laden vehicles on the road.

Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin said that relying on rivers to transport such goods would in turn also ensure roads were not damaged by heavy vehicles.

“I’ve suggested that we use our rivers to transport bulk goods for example construction materials, crude palm oil, gravel or logs rather than using roads which can cause a lot of damage to the roads,”  he said.

Speaking after declaring open a two-day legal programme for Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) enforcement officers here on Wednesday, he said an indepth study on the matter would be carried out by his ministry together with the State Economic Planing Unit.

A total of 50 SRB enforcement officers from Kuching, Sibu and Miri are taking part in the programme.

Also present were Deputy Minister Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, principal assistant secretary to the ministry, Rozita Kulai and SRB assitant controller, Region III Leonard Luhat Laing.
