DEBAK: A RM16 million collection, processing and packaging centre (CPPC) is being built near Bebuling to facilitate an expected increase in food production following the construction of the Bebuling STOLport.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said this was to ensure agricultural and livestock products can be sold.

“For residents who do not have land, the development of agricultural parks provides opportunities for them to participate.

“I am confident that Betong will be ready with sufficient yields when the Bebuling STOLport project is completed.

“We are doing a lot of things, including developing CPPCs, Lubok Tamang Agricultural Park, and Bebuling Agricultural Park, and we are ready to find other areas.

“At the same time, we are promoting the production of other local products through economic activities in villages that have potential as small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” he said during the Saribas Aidilfitri reception at the Riveria Sports Centre here today (May 7).

As the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Uggah is confident that the Bebuling project, which has been improved in terms of specifications, can be completed on schedule, as much work has already been completed in the first phase.

“For me, it’s an exciting journey for the Betong Division, which promises great benefits if everything goes smoothly,” he said.

On the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA), Uggah, who is also the chairman, hoped to spend RM1.5 billion in allocation over the next two to three years.

“That is why our strategy is to look for projects that we can implement quickly, such as farm roads that do not require approval from certain bodies, without land problems and with the support of the people.

“Indeed, most of the proposed projects are for basic infrastructure, but we add infrastructure for livestock,” he added.

He also said that the BDDA’s allocation of RM200 million to each constituency would be enjoyed by the people.

In another development Uggah who is also chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said all agencies must play their respective roles in facing up to the prevailing hot and dry weather.

“The Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), the Department of Environment (DOE), and the Fire and Rescue Department  have been directed to be ready to ensure any open burning is controlled.

“Likewise, the Resident’s Office, District Office, and Department of Community Welfare are monitoring drinking water supplies because problems have been identified in several areas that indicated a shortage of water supply,” he said.

About 1,000 guests attended the Aidilfitri open house hosted by Saribas assemblyman Mohammad Razi Sitam.

Betong MP Dr. Richard Rapu, Betong Resident Richard Michael Abunawas, and Betong District Officer Alfred Geling Ason were also present.
