SIBU: Upgrading works to turn Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah into a dual-carriageway will commence soon, said Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

Tiang, who is the Pelawan assemblyman, said a tender for the project will be called next month.

The project, he said, will involve upgrading works on the single-carriageway Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah to turn it into a dual-carriageway road.

“The project involves Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah to upgrade the 2.2-kilometre stretch to a dual carriageway.

“The budget for this will be RM45 million and it has already been approved under the 12th Malaysia Midterm Review,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the lighting-up ceremony near Taman Muhibbah food court here last night (Aug 14).

Tiang said the state funding project should have commenced last year, however, due to certain circumstances the upgrading works had to be stalled.

“The most work required (in the upgrading project) is to shift away the utilities (to make way) for the road expansion because I mention about the delay before and the public thought that it was cancelled.

“We want to revise the original budget from RM38 million now to RM45 million,” he added, he said adding that the projected is expected to completed in two years.

Meanwhile, on the light decoration project, Tiang said the cost of RM6,000 was funded under his constituency’s Minor Rural Project (MRP) fund.

Also present was Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh.
