KUCHING: The Sarawak Land and Survey Department has been granted an allocation of RM5 million to bolster training and human capital development among its personnel.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who approved the allocation, said the funds would be used to enhance the knowledge of department employees, particularly in the context of the new economy.

“I would also wish to express my gratitude to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and other higher education institutions for collaborating to impart knowledge to the involved staff.

“I was also informed that 15 officers are participating in a special Master’s programme, namely the Master of Geomatics Engineering. This aligns with the ongoing changes in the current economic landscape.

Abang Johari said this during the Sarawak Land and Survey Department Summit 2024 closing ceremony held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Saturday night (Feb 3).

Meanwhile, the premier stressed on the importance of data and digitalisation where data can be both stored and used to find solutions.

“Therefore, I want to congratulate the Land and Survey Department as you have established a data layer.

“This layered data can be shared with other departments, thus there is a convergence of data. We share this convergence of data, and it will accelerate further development in Sarawak, including the treasures bestowed by Allah upon us,” he said.

With the Sarawak Land and Survey Department being 106 years old, Abang Johari said the approach to survey work by the department must continue to evolve.

During the event, the premier witnessed the launch of the latest guidelines for the village expansion scheme and resettlement scheme.

Also held was also a presentation of the International Convention on Quality Control Circles (ICQCC) 2023 trophy. Last year, Sarawak Land and Survey Department were among the six teams from the state that clinched the Gold Award at the 48th ICQCC.

Among those present were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; and Sarawak Land and Survey director Datuk Abdullah Julaihi.
