ULU SUAI: A 19km gravel and earth road here is being upgraded using the Cold In-Situ Pavement Recycling (CIPR) technology.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg last Tuesday visited the site of the project undertaken by Perbena Emas to witness its progress.

CIPR technology is recommended for road construction to minimise the use of quarry products, disposal of existing material with fewer trucks on the road network by recycling ground material and use locally excavated material, therefore reduces construction costs and time.

The technology, with locally sourced material, is an ideal solution for Sarawak’s roads construction where natural resources are depleted, and construction cost is increasing.

The process is performed using a ‘train’ of equipment which includes a crusher, water truck, pulverising machine and a combination of pneumatic vibratory rollers and motor grader.

It first involves breaking up the locally sourced material, blending and recompacting it to make a new pavement. Binder is then added to the mixture to improve strength and material properties. This involves less manpower as well.

“Road plays an important role in transportation of goods and services, so it is important to ensure that it performs functionally and structurally.

“We are very thankful that Abang Johari can attend this site visit to witness for himself this new innovative technology,” said the company’s Civil and Infrastructural general manager Samir Derviskadic.

Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd is the first company in Sarawak to source for local material and rely on recycling, which minimises imports. With fewer trucks on the road network, the company aims to reduce the usage of fuel and therefore minimise pollution.

Taking an environmentally friendly and innovative approach towards construction has always been in Perbena Emas’ pipeline. Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd is a civil engineering and general construction company which specialises in roads, infrastructures and buildings.
