DARO: The Search and Rescue (SAR) operation for the missing Indonesian fishermen in the waters of Pulau Bruit concluded on its third day, with the Forward Search Base (PHC) disbanded at 5pm yesterday.

Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Gilbert Tinggak Numpang said the search sector covered 95 square nautical miles around the north of Pulau Bruit and the coastal areas.

“The sea and weather conditions at the incident location were favourable, with wind speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour and wave heights of 1.5 to 2.5 metres.

“Considering the extensive search sector, no new clues were found in the first three days, covering 168 square nautical miles. Therefore, the SAR operation was concluded,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He mentioned that three assets were deployed in this operation, involving the Malaysian Maritime and Marine Police Force, namely KM SRI AMAN, PSC 55, and PETIR 82.

He said that the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Kuching had coordinated the operation with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM), the Civil Defense Force (APM) and the Marine Police Force (PPM) with a total of 53 personnel.

He noted that if any new discoveries arise, the SAR operation would be resumed.

Gilbert also advised the public, especially the maritime community, to remain cautious, wear life jackets, and consider carrying a ‘Personal Locator Beacon’ (PLB) when venturing into the sea.

Additionally, he noted that for information regarding misconduct or emergency incidents at sea, the public can contact the Sarawak State Maritime Operations Center at 082-432544 or MERS 999 for immediate action.
