MIRI: Sarawak has achieved ‘carbon negativity,’ outpacing the global net zero carbon emissions goal.

In announcing this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak’s energy composition of 70 percent hydro and 30 percent gas has contributed to this milestone.

He said when attending the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai last week, he had the opportunity to interact with people attending the conference.

“They were talking about net zero. I said Sarawak is (carbon) negative, we have more hydrogen and oxygen than carbon.

“Sarawak is very fortunate that it is powered 70 percent by hydro and 30 percent by gas.

“This is because we still have a lot of tropical rainforests, and our power is green and we are going towards a green economy,” he said during the officiation of the 20th World Xu Clannish Gala Night held at Pullman Hotel here last night (Dec 16).

He pointed out that Sarawak, with its abundant renewable resources, remains open to collaborations, including with the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce.

“Therefore, I welcome the World Xu Clannish Association, a platform with established bond and relationship, to nurture and extend this to other ethnic groups, the Malays, Orang Ulu, Melanau, Bidayuh so that we have a common platform for us to work together for the benefit of mankind,” he added.

On another note, he highlighted that talent development and focusing on technology are key factors for translating Sarawak’s high-income status into increased household income.

He said this approach is in line with Sarawak’s current trajectory towards digitisation and clean energy transition, under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy.

“What is important now is for us to get our children studying the latest technology available. Technology is the keyword now.

“In Sarawak, there are more avenues for our children to further their study. For instance, Sarawak has officially recognised the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) but not in Peninsular Malaysia,” he added.
