KUCHING: Sarawak plans to completely transform its public transportation system, particularly in Kuching city, by opting for zero-emission vehicles powered by hydrogen and electricity by the year 2030.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the move is aimed at making Kuching a clean city, free from carbon emission and as part of the larger vision to turn it into a smart city.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Kuching and Miri cities have inched closer to obtaining the smart city recognition by hitting 61 out of 80 smart city key indicators based on the Malaysian standard.

The 80 key indicators implemented by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) are based on MS ISO MS ISO 37122:2019, which are listed by the federal Ministry of Local Government Development and Department of Town and Country Planning (PlanMalaysia).

“Sarawak is currently producing hydrogen which is being trialled on our public buses. Hopefully by the year 2030, our public transport, particularly in Kuching city to begin with, will either be on hydrogen or electricity,” he said.

With Sarawak taking the lead and commitment towards a sustainable future, Abang Johari pointed out that the state has embarked on an energy transition policy to embrace the new and green economy.

“Sarawak is committed to a hydrogen-based economy in recognition of hydrogen as a fuel of the future and a potential solution to the pressing global climate crisis,” he said.

Among those present at event were Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni and Deputy State Secretary Datuk Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
