KUCHING: Sarawak has entered a pivotal period of nation building to regain its rights and autonomy, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said Sarawak has set ambitious goals under its Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, and the window is closing for the state to realise its economic potential before 2030.

“We are entering the stage of nation building. Nation building depends on opportunities. The opportunity is now for Sarawak.”

He said this during the Kuching Division Journalist Association (KDJA) Chinese New Year gala dinner here yesterday (Feb 26).

Reflecting on Sarawak’s values, Dr Sim emphasised the essence of racial harmony, mutual respect, religious tolerance, and equitable resource distribution in the nation-building process.

“Sarawak is in a phase of nation-building, which is not just about having a lot of money, but is for the people to understand Sarawak’s values and way of life.”

He urged active participation from all Sarawakians, especially the youth, emphasising the importance of teamwork in achieving collective goals.

On another matter, Dr Sim stressed that amid evolving media landscapes, it has become a critical time for professionalism in journalism, especially in combating fake news and misinformation.

“The professionalism of journalism is more important now than ever since everyone, whether young or old, can be a journalist.”

Having said that, he commended KDJA for its contributions to nation-building over the past four decades and expressed optimism for continued collaboration.
