KUCHING: Housing developers have been called upon to introduce and build smart houses that incorporate solar power systems.

Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said, as Sarawak is the largest contributor of solar panels in the world, located in Longi, the move will support the state’s environmental sustainability efforts.

Speaking at his Hari Raya open house yesterday, Abdul Rahman echoed Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s previous statements urging housing developers to include solar panels in homes. This, he said, would help to save energy and reduce electricity consumption.

Abdul Rahman further noted that Sarawak and Malaysia have an advantage in solar technology due to their tropical climate.

He suggested amending housing laws to ensure that more homes in Sarawak are equipped with solar panels, to benefit all residents.

According to him, this proposal had already been discussed by the Sarawak Housing and Real Estate (SHEDA) during Abang Johari’s tenure as Minister of Housing, indicating that there is existing interest in the initiative.
