KUCHING: Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi has put forth a suggestion to designate July as Sarawak Cleanliness Month, beginning from 2024, in a bid to propel Sarawak towards becoming the cleanest state in Malaysia.
As the Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Utility), he stressed that this proposal would involve over 26 local councils throughout the state and other relevant parties to collectively advance the goal of a cleaner and more progressive Sarawak.
“Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has proposed July as the designated month, as this approach is conducive to sharing and adopting by other councils across Sarawak.
“I will be meeting with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg sometime this week to discuss and seek his approval on this matter.”
Dr Abdul Rahman further stated that upon approval and recognition by the state government, the programme’s implementation would commence in July 2024.
“At present, only DBKU, Kuching South City Council (MBKS), and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) have been practicing this programme annually in July.”
During his speech at the closing ceremony of Kuching City Cleanliness Month on Tuesday (Aug 8), he extended an invitation to all relevant parties to unite and collaborate, advocating for the programme to be held in every town and city across Sarawak.
He stressed that this collective effort aimed to foster a sense of unity among Sarawakians, especially the younger generations, in promoting cleanliness.
Dr Abdul Rahman believes that with widespread participation, Sarawak has the potential to become the cleanest state in Malaysia.
“Since the programme’s inception in 2021, the public’s involvement has steadily increased, reflecting its positive impact on the community,” he added.
Also present during the ceremony were DBKU mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan and other distinguished guests.
