Sarawak Coast Guard successfully conducts 27 patrols

MIRI: The Sarawak Coast Guard (SCG) has successfully carried out 27 patrol operations since it started on April 7, 2021.

Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) director Datu Dr Chai Khin Chung shared that the SCG has been actively involved in 10 Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. They have also conducted two SAR training sessions in collaboration with other agencies. This active participation has greatly benefited the SCG’s enforcement personnel and officers, enhancing their skills and competence.

Chai further explained that SCG personnel receive comprehensive training in various areas. They attend competency courses at reputable government or private institutions to acquire a diverse skill set. These courses cover topics such as Seaman Basic Training, Engineer Officer Less Than 750 Kilowatt on Domestic Voyage, Mate of Less than 500 Gross Tonnage on Domestic Voyage, Basic Meteorology Course, Criminal Investigation Basic Courses, and Security and Psychology Basic Courses.

He said this at the launching ceremony of UKPS’s headquarters and the handover of six island class patrol vessels took place here on Monday (July 17).

These events were officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The six patrol vessels have been named SC SARI 2501, SC SATANG 2502, SC BURUNG 2503, SC SAMPADI 2504, SC TUKONG ARA 2505, and SC TALANG-TALANG 2506.

These vessels were acquired through an open tender and built by a company based in Kuala Baram.

Also present were former Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Development Datuk Rosey Yunus, and Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting.
