KUCHING: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen has voiced full support for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah’s call for a significant upgrade and enhancement of facilities at Kuching International Airport (KIA).

In a statement on Friday (April 19), Chong also pledged to engage in discussions with federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke to prioritise this matter.

“Airports serve as the gateway to any tourist destination, shaping the first impression for visitors. I fully agree with Abdul Karim that KIA needs a major upgrade to be on par, if not better, with the standards of other international airports in the country.

“With Sarawak set to host numerous major national and international events in the coming months, it is of utmost urgency that the facilities at KIA undergo immediate enhancement to create a positive first impression for tourists and visitors.

“Besides, given the rapid growth in tourist arrivals, it is also timely that KIA be extended to cater to the expected increase.”

Chong, who is also the Stampin MP, pointed out that the last time KIA had a major extension and upgrading work was in 2003, which was 20 years ago.

Since then, he said tourist arrivals have increased significantly, justifying the need for a second major extension and upgrading of KIA.

In addition to advocating for the enhancement of existing facilities, Chong also expressed his intent to urge Loke to allocate capital expenditure for KIA’s extension.

“We hope the Ministry of Transport will prioritise the upgrading and extension project of KIA.”
