SIBU: In 2022, Sarawak demonstrated its economic prowess as it solidified its position as the third-largest contributor to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), marking a momentous achievement for the state on its 60th independence anniversary.

Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee highlighted that the state’s remarkable 9.5 per cent share of the nation’s economic output was primarily driven by natural resource extraction and exports, including vital commodities such as oil and gas, timber, and palm oil. These industries played a significant role in shaping Sarawak’s GDP.

“With Peninsular Malaysia, China, and Japan being its main trade partners, Sarawak’s growth and development were evident in sectors like agriculture, energy, and tourism, making it a prominent economic powerhouse within the country,” she told New Sarawak Tribune recently.

Sustainable development remained a top priority for Sarawak, as she stressed the importance of preserving biodiversity, forests, and rivers while promoting environmentally-friendly industrial practices.

Referring to the article Transforming Exploitative Land-based Economy: The Case of Borneo (2020), bio-economy and eco-economy concepts could be explored for sustainable development, she said.

Looking toward the future, Rodiyah expressed the crucial role of investing in education and human capital development.

“By empowering local talents and fostering research, Sarawak can cultivate a skilled workforce that will drive economic diversification and technological advancements.”

Infrastructure and connectivity also played vital roles in the state’s socioeconomic growth. “Upgrading road networks, expanding air and sea transport, and investing in digital connectivity are identified as measures to facilitate trade, tourism and overall development.”

In addition, preserving and celebrating cultural heritage were emphasised, with a focus on supporting indigenous communities and promoting cultural tourism to foster a more inclusive and vibrant society.

Rodiyah urged all Sarawakians to unite and support the state’s progress under the leadership of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government led by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Maintaining harmony and unity among the people is essential in driving Sarawak towards a prosperous and thriving future. Happy Sarawak Day to all Sarawakians. Sarawak Maju Makmur.”
