KUCHING: Sarawak Energy, the largest renewable energy developer in Malaysia, has become the first Southeast Asian company to sign with the World Energy Council as a global Patron.

The partnership was formalized through a virtual signing ceremony with Dr Angela Wilkinson, the CEO of the World Energy Council, and Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, Sarawak Energy Group CEO.

As a major hydropower developer in Southeast Asia, Sarawak Energy will support the Council in catalysing energy transitions worldwide.

In return, it will gain access to the Council’s extensive network of over 3,000 member organizations in more than 90 countries, benefiting from global insights and best practices on energy policy, innovation, and sustainability strategies.

Sarawak Energy joins a distinguished group of Patrons from the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, including notable names like Boeing, EDF, ADNOC, EY, PWC, State Grid Corporation of China, and KAPSARC.

Dr Wilkinson expressed her delight in welcoming Sarawak Energy into the Council’s world energy leadership community, emphasizing their century of experience in inclusive energy access and their contribution to facilitating collaboration and faster, fairer, and more far-reaching energy transitions worldwide.

Sharbini highlighted Sarawak Energy’s desire to be part of the broader international energy leadership community by becoming a Patron.

The partnership allows Sarawak Energy to tap into a global network of energy industry players as they continue to explore energy transition solutions for their region.

Over the past four decades, Sarawak Energy’s strategic shift to renewable hydropower has balanced energy security, affordability, and sustainability, driving sustainable growth in Sarawak and paving the way for exploring low-carbon energy solutions like floating solar and green hydrogen production.

Sarawak Energy has achieved significant progress in reducing Sarawak’s power grid emission intensity by over 70% between 2010 and 2021.

As the world intensifies its energy transition efforts, Sarawak Energy is advancing plans to share its renewable energy resources with neighbouring countries through interconnections, such as the Borneo Grid and ASEAN Power Grid.
