KUCHING: The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Sarawak will organise a charity ‘Run for Humanity’ this year and also for the next two consecutive years.

This year’s run, divided into two categories namely 3km fun run and 10km competitive run, will be held on Nov 10. The event is scheduled to commence at 5.30am and end at 10.30am.

According to MRC Sarawak, at least 1,000 participants would take part in the run with the first-place winner of the 10km run (male and female) taking home RM500 plus a trophy and medal.

Second and third-place winners will receive RM300 and RM200 plus a trophy and a medal each, respectively. Those finishing in fourth to 10th spots will take home RM100 and a medal each while those in 11th to 20th positions will get RM50 and a medal each.

The main objective of the run is to raise funds to purchase a Community-based Ambulance Service (CBAS).

MRC Sarawak in a media statement yesterday said the organisation was stepping up its capacity through effective resource development to enhance its CBAS to serve the greater Kuching communities and beyond.

“As Kuching District is a fast-growing metropolitan city with its vast expansion of residential and commercial centres in the immediate suburbs, the need for effective and efficient ambulance service becomes greater.

“Such service would require fast and timely response and professional pre-hospital care to be rendered to those during medical emergencies. The application of life-saving skills and right resources increases the survival rate of victims. MRC as a humanitarian organisation and auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field is thus well-positioned with these competencies to operate this service.”

Sarawak MRC said it had placed orders for one unit of Class B ambulance, which would be delivered soon. The vehicle, including conversion, fabrication, installation of ancillaries and supply of medical support equipment, costs approximately RM300,000.
