SERIAN: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced the Sarawak government’s goal of achieving a gross domestic product (GDP) of RM1.4bil for Serian Division by 2030.

According to him, the division currently has reached a GDP of RM600mil.

“The GDP target for Serian division by 2030 is RM1.4bil. At present, the GDP for Serian is RM600mil, meaning there is an additional RM800mil needed to achieve the target,” he told the media following the State Development Coordination Committee Meeting at Serian Conference Centre today (Nov 16).

Abang Johari expressed confidence that Serian can attain this target with the development of necessary infrastructure and by positioning itself as one of the tourism hubs in Sarawak.

He outlined the vision for Serian’s tourism sector, aiming to shape it as a ‘mini New Zealand’, drawing inspiration from the country’s successful tourism model.

“Serian can be made into a mini New Zealand with a model following that country. First, Serian has a landscape similar to mountainous areas. Secondly, Serian has rivers as well as the cultural heritage of the local community, especially the Bidayuhs.”
