MIRI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has protected religious freedom in Sarawak, rejecting elements of extremism that could jeopardise Sarawak’s unity, harmony, and stability.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shim said the state’s multicultural and multi-racial diversity is a source of beauty and strength, where different races are free to practise their culture, traditions and religion without hindrance.

Having said that, he encouraged upholding the togetherness and trust among all individuals to ensure that Sarawak is peaceful and continues to be a shining example of unity in diversity.

He said Sarawak is set to welcome the Year of the Rabbit as the Chinese New Year (CNY) drums prepare to beat.

“I hope that the Year of the Rabbit brings Sarawak and all Sarawakians prosperity, strength in unity, good health, best luck and the courage to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said in his CNY message.

With minimal restrictions in place, the reopening of the country’s borders, and the resumption of international travel, Lee said more families can reunite and celebrate Chinese New Year together this year.

Even so, as the Chinese gather to celebrate the New Year, he pointed out that they must continue to exercise social responsibility, practise good personal hygiene, and stay vigilant.

On the same note, Lee, who is also the Senadin assemblyman, cherished the Sarawakian way of commemorating festivities.

He asserted that Sarawak’s ‘open house’ tradition, which welcomes all guests during festive times, is a unique and beautiful way to enjoy the season together.

“It is open to friends regardless of race, ethnicity, or religious background. I am very proud of the way we live in Sarawak; we are very supportive of one another, especially during celebrations, no matter whether it is Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Gawai, Deepavali, or Christmas.

“This enables us to learn about each other’s customs and develop a harmonious community where everyone lives together peacefully and in unity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lee advised all commuters to drive safely and stay alert, especially on wet roads, in light of the recent unpredictability of the weather.

“For those who are going to travel back to their hometown, plan the journey in advance to avoid unnecessary delay,” he said.

Chinese New Year, also known as the Chinese Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, is the most important season of the traditional Chinese festivals.

The significance of family bonds is emphasised in welcoming the Lunar New Year.
