KUCHING: Sarawak’s Eugenia David took the top spot in the Girls Under 19 Category at the 7th Borneo Junior Open 2023, yesterday.
The young squash player was crowned champion in the category after she defeated Kuala Lumpur’s Sangeethapriya Devar Sukurmaran in three game sets with 11-6, 11-3 and 11-4 within 19 minutes at the Sarawak Squash Centre.
Sangeethapriya took second place in the tournament while Zi Fang Lee from Singapore grabbed third place in the category.
Lee also went on to win three game sets scoring 11-5, 11-4 and 11-7 against Penang’s Reshika Rajarathinam within 17 minutes.
In the Boys Under 19 Category, Tay Jun Qian of Selangor took the top spot, defeating Sarawak’s Wong Lee Hong.
Wong won in the first set of the play with 8-11, but Tay got the better of him and went on to win in the rest of the game sets.
From the second to the fourth game sets, the Selangor teenager scored 11-6, 11-6 and 11-5 within 41 minutes.
The category also saw Selangor’s Harold Rynesh Aloysius taking third place after defeating fellow statesman Thineshraj Chandrasegaran with 11-5, 11-9 and 11-0 in 20 minutes.
The rest of the squash tournament crowned champions in other categories – Kayvern Arthur of Penang (Boys Under 11), Yin Zi Yuan of China (Girls Under 11), Huzaifa Shahid of Pakistan (Boys Under 13) and Selangor’s Niea Chew in the Girls Under 13 Category.
Oon Jayden and Dakshayani Thangaraja both of Kuala Lumpur are winners in the Boys Under 15 and Girls Under 15 categories, respectively.
Altamis Aqhar Sallam A Sufian from Sarawak won the Boys Under 17 while Singapore’s Vicky Lai is champion in Girls Under 17.
The 7th Borneo Junior Open 2023 was held for six days starting from July 11 to 16 and competed by junior squash players from states in Malaysia, China, Canada, the Philippines, Pakistan and other nations
