LAWAS: Sarawak has taken a new direction and approach in its economic development as it celebrates 60 years of independence.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said the Sarawak government had also taken the initiative to train the youth to continue the state’s development efforts.

“From the point of view of terminology, information technology (IT), we use Global Positioning System (GPS) for navigation …and for Sarawak, we are lucky to have GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) which knows the direction that we are heading towards.

“We (GPS) know the direction, which is why we have trained our young children to continue our development efforts towards the next 60 years.

“We even have a Technical Excellence Centre (CENTEXS) to train them for this change,” he said when flagging off the Kembara Sarawak convoy in conjunction with Sarawak’s 60th anniversary celebration at Taman Awam Lawas on Sunday (May 28).

Abang Johari said that a delegation from a leading bank in Singapore had visited him recently.

“They told me that they can see Sarawak’s great potential and that our future is well directed. With the potential that we have, they also said that Sarawak may be the economic powerhouse in the region. Not Malaysia but in the region.

“Our potentials that we may take for granted are seen by outsiders. Therefore, we need to take care of our unity. Only through unity, political stability, and a strong government can Sarawak become the most advanced state in Malaysia by 2030,” he said.

He emphasised that despite the differences in background and religious belief, it was important for the people to stay united to develop Sarawak to a higher level.

“I am getting old so I hope that the next generation will continue to develop the state and Malaysia as a leading country in the region.

“I also hope that Sarawak’s economic transition towards a modern economy based on the green economy will be exemplary to the world,” he said.
