Sarawak’s positive cases exceed 40k

KUCHING: Sarawak’s positive Covid-19 cases crossed the 40k mark with 608 new cases today, bringing the state’s tally to 40,259.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said 442 of the new cases, or 72.70 percent, were detected in the districts of Sibu, Miri, Kuching, Kapit and Bintulu.

Sibu district accounted for 120 cases, Miri (110), Kuching (86), Kapit (76), Bintulu (50), Selangau (32), Pakan (19), Bukit Mabong (15), Song (12), Samarahan (11), Lawas (10), Serian (nine), Sarikei (eight), Subis, Saratok and Mukah recorded seven cases each, Sebauh (six), Bau (five), Belaga and Betong (four each), Julau, Asajaya and Pusa (two each), while Dalat, Kanowit, Simunjan and Meradong all recorded one case.

“Of the 608 new cases reported, 86 people showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection during screening,” SDMC said in a statement.

The other 494 individuals were those who had been given quarantine orders.

On the breakdown of the new cases, 431 were individuals who had contact with positive Covid-19 cases, 68 were from symptomatic individual screenings at health facilities, 61 were linked to existing active clusters, 46 were from other screenings at health facilities, one was a person who had returned from Suriname (categorised as Import A), and one was a person who had returned from another state in Malaysia (categorised as Import B).

“Today (Thursday), 717 patients have recovered and been discharged,” said the committee.

“This brings the number of recovered and discharged cases to 33,542, or 83.32 percent of the total number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak,” said SDMC.

There are still 6,387 people being isolated and treated at hospital wards and PKRCs throughout the state.

A total of 619 new persons-under-investigation (PUIs) have been reported with none awaiting laboratory test results.
