BETONG: The federal government must have strategic ideas when implementing education policy.

In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said when it comes to constructing schools, there must be a standard to follow.

Explaining, he said SK Maludam built by the Sarawak government at RM34 million here is the standard the state hopes for in schools.

“The federal government should not build schools below the standard that we have here. Although the schools are under the federal government’s jurisdiction based on the Constitution, we cannot leave our children and teachers to study and teach in dilapidated schools.

“Therefore, the Sarawak government stepped up and helped the federal government to construct the school.

“We built the school with good standards and quality so that teachers are motivated to teach the children here,” he said when officiating SK Maludam here today.

Given the importance of education, he said when he took over as Chief Minister back in 2017, he established a state level Education Ministry.

“Its establishment is not to take over (the role of the federal government) but it is because I see that children are an important asset for our future.

“I hope SK Maludam here will be the example of how primary schools should be built,” he said.
