Search continues for capsize victim

SAR day one on Tuesday ,looking for the missing Jangin after a boat was capsized in Sungai Tutoh Hulu Sungai Baram on Monday (July 17).

MARUDI: A search and rescue operation was mounted on Tuesday afternoon (July 18) for a man reported missing after a boat carrying six people capsized in Sungai Tutoh Hulu Sungai Baram.

The man has been identified as 67 year-old Jangin Luwau, a special needs individual who does not know how to swim.

Five others, two of them females, managed to swim to safety following the capsize.

According to Marudi Fire and Rescue station chief Maureen Sim, they were alerted about the incident at 8.30pm on Monday (July 17).

“The boat was enroute to Ba Selulong from Kampung Long Bedian,” she said.

It is understood that the boat passengers had been in the village (Kampung Long Bedian) to seek medical treatment at the clinic there and had purchased groceries before they left for Ba’ Selulong.

The boat is believed to have capzised at 5.30pm on Monday.

On July 18 (Tuesday), a team of firemen from here was deployed to the scene in a Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Air Unit.

The search and rescue began at 12.30pm covering a 3km radius until about 6.30pm.

It resumed on Wednesday (July 19).
