KUCHING: There is nothing for the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to boast as self-praise is no praise, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Kitang secretary Tnay Li Ping.

Tnay, when interviewed by New Sarawak Tribune yesterday, said the one-year PH rule has instead made the people more frustrated and angrier.

She said there were so many U-turn policies which could fill pages if she were to list them all but she wanted to emphasis on the importance of education.

“The Education Ministry is one of the most important to salvage a broken country especially in the long run.

“We need to teach the future generation how to be competitive and to bring the country to see better days.

“Black shoes or socks or swimming pools are not going to save this country from ‘low-standard’ education which is the fault of the Education Ministry,” she said.

Providing an example, Tnay said she was invited to a forum in China where Asean educators met to discuss on how they improve the education system to give the youngsters in time of globalisation needs.

“The items discussed were all about how best to educate the youngsters. It cuts across race and religion.

“But sadly, in Malaysia, we are still talking about how many per cent to give to this race and mark-up certain marks for them to be on par with the rest.

“I am not being critical here. I feel that if such a system continues, our education system is going to be the first in the world, counting from bottom up,” she said.

Asking the Education Minister to buck up or to learn from developed countries on how to educate youths, Tnay said it is so important that educators must be picked from the best.

She said it should be so because educators are going to teach future doctors, lawyers, engineers, and professionals.

“If you pick someone due to the colour of their skin and who is not up to the mark, that will be the reason why our youngsters cannot even recite A to Z despite being in secondary schools,” she added.

Tnay said it is time the Education Minister save the country by putting smart people in the right place instead of relying on quotas.

“Otherwise, I can say he is not fit to be a minister if he does not set things right,” she added.
