SARIKEI: An elderly woman sustained injuries to her arms after jumping into a 5m-deep concrete drain along Jalan Meranti early yesterday (Jan 18).

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they received a distress call around 10am and deployed firemen from the Sarikei station to the scene.

The team attempted to persuade the 65-year-old to step away from the edge of the drain but it was no use.

Nonetheless, a fireman, who had taken up position in the drain, managed to grab the woman’s hand and brought her to safety.

She was then given first aid before being taken to hospital for further treatment.
