KUCHING: Bringing up a vote of no confidence against newly appointed Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in the upcoming Parliament sitting on May 18 will only open up old wounds and create a new political crisis, said political analyst Datuk Peter Minos.

He said that Malaysians were fed up of political crises and would be displeased if a new one should arise.

“Why not just wait with patience for the next general election in 2023?” he questioned, being of the view that Pakatan Harapan (PH) would not be successful in their no confidence endeavours.

He noted that some quarters were hitting out at the new Perikatan Nasional (PN) federal government for having United Malays National Organisation (Umno) and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) in it, calling Umno “corrupt” and PAS “religious extremists”.

“But if Umno and PAS were not in, the PN government could not have been formed to replace a fallen and broken-down PH government.

“The new prime minister had to get partners to set up a new federal government as the PH government suddenly collapsed due to purely internal problems,” said Minos.

Addressing these accusers, he said that those being alleged as corrupt were now paying the price at courts. He felt it was unfair to call the entire Umno party corrupt.

As for PAS, he said, “Not long ago, those now calling PAS ‘religious extremists’ were in cahoots with PAS in trying to topple Barisan Nasional (BN); hypocrisy is not fruitful.”

He was of the view that the recent political crisis was solely triggered by PH itself, and not PN. He added that the appointment of Muhyiddin as prime minister was legal and constitutional and there was thus no ‘backdoor’ government.

“A responsible party, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) had no choice but to help in solving the national political crisis, while simultaneously defending Sarawak’s rights and interests,” said Minos.

He opined that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had done the right thing in such circumstances — describing the decision as a “good and smart move”.

He urged Malaysians to settle down and move on.
