Seven arrests made following altercation in Machan

KANOWIT: Law enforcement authorities have apprehended seven individuals in connection with an altercation that occurred in Machan town.

Kanowit OCPD DSP Tega Bilong said that five men, aged between 20 and 45, were apprehended in and around Sibu town on Aug 8, around 6.30pm.

Additionally, on Aug 9 at 11am, two men aged 21 and 57 were taken into custody. All suspects are presently under police remand, awaiting further investigative procedures.

“The underlying cause of the altercation appears to be a dispute concerning unpaid salary dues, which resulted in a man sustaining hand injuries after being struck by a vehicle owned by another individual,” DSP Tega clarified.

“The Kanowit District police received reports linked to the incident on the evening of Aug 8, registered under report number 938/2023, filed by a man. This was followed by another report from an individual under report number 939/2023, both around 3.15pm.”

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the case under Section 148 of the Penal Code, considering that the altercation occurred within a public area.

Amid these developments, the police have urged the public to refrain from engaging in speculative discussions that might impede the ongoing investigation.

Addressing speculations that have arisen in certain social media circles, the police categorically denied any presence of ethnic or racial motivations behind the incident.
