KUCHING: The Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (SHEDA) recently organised a workshop to enhance the expertise of media practitioners in their reporting on property market and development.

SHEDA partnered with Kuching Division Journalist Association (KDJA) to organise a capacity-building workshop aimed at providing insights into Sarawak’s housing industry and clarifying the technical jargon used in the field.

SHEDA secretary general Angie Kueh underscored the significance of media practitioners understanding technical jargon and terminologies to effectively convey information to the public.

She cited the example of the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 which was introduced to the public by the media without proper explanation of the numerous new terms and concepts.

“Such lack of understanding can lead reporters to be unsure about what questions to ask and ultimately hinder effective communication with the public.

“Therefore, we need to enhance the capacity of media practitioners, enabling them to gain a better grasp of the various concepts being discussed.

“This way, we can effectively bridge the gap of understanding with the public at large,” she said during the workshop held at the SHEDA secretariat office here today.

Meanwhile, Kueh urged other associations to follow suit in organising similar dialogues and workshops to enhance the expertise of media professionals in various sectors.

“Dialogues like this can efficiently equip media practitioners with knowledge and provide a platform to address their questions and concerns with the right expertise,” she said.

The workshop earlier focused on topics such as local housing market trends, affordable housing and policies affecting eligibility, role of big data in policymaking, sustainable and green building practices, and community engagement in the industry.
