KUCHING: Construction work on the Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple that is set become another landmark in the city will begin next month.

In disclosing this, Sikh Temple Kuching president Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira added that the tender process has been completed and that they are now finalising negotiations with the contractor.

“When all these processes are completed, we will start the construction of the project next month.

“We estimate that the temple will fully be completed within 18 to 24 months,” he said after hosting a Diwali open house at his house on Monday (Oct 24).

He stated that the said temple will be built at an estimated cost of RM5 million.

He said that aside from providing a place for Sikhs to pray, it will also offer other services for the community, especially the youth.

“This temple will be like a small school where there will be a community hall, library and a sports ground.

Dr Kalwinder said with the various developments around here such as the Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) and the Hikmah Complex, the area will definitely be a major attraction.

In this context he said the project is very important to the community especially the Sikh community and the city of Kuching as a whole.

“For that, we are always grateful to the Premier as he is someone who is very supportive towards our community.

“Without his support it would be difficult to implement this project,” he said.
