KUCHING: Local Government Minister, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian yesterday launched the Sarawak Scout Heritage Gallery located in the Scout Foundation Of Sarawak building at Jalan Batu Lintang here.
In his speech, Sim said that the launching of the gallery was timely and appropriate.
“After 103 years of scouting in Sarawak, the gallery is another major milestone for the scout movement in the state. It is also to acknowledge and recognise all the past scouting leaders, moments and also their activities,” he added.
“This is your gallery, you have to look after it and take it further by adding more to the gallery in time to come,” Sim urged all scouts.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Scout Foundation Sarawak, Ng Yaw Hua said: “The foundation is proud to be associated with the establishment of this heritage gallery and has spent over RM40,000 in bringing this gallery to life. I believe this is money well spent.
“It will be a centre of learning besides being a repository of scouting memorabilia.
“At this juncture, I must also acknowledge the contributions and efforts of all those who have helped to set up this gallery.
“In particular, I would like to recognise the organising chairman, John Lim Boon Beng, who has tenderly crafted this gallery from scratch. It is his labour of love.”
Ng also thanked Dr Sim for his contribution to the gallery but did not disclose the amount of grant received.
One of the objectives of the Sarawak Scout Heritage Gallery is to collect and preserve historical information including artifacts and memorabilia, manuscripts, documents and photographs relating to scouting, particularly in Sarawak.
Also present at the launching ceremony were Chief Scout Commissioner of Sarawak, Sudaryo Osman and SUPP Public Complaints Bureau (SUPP PCB) chief, Wilfred Yap.
