MIRI: Six jobless men were arrested by police for allegedly involved in five cable theft cases in Kuala Baram, Senadin and Permyjaya here.
Miri District Police chief, ACP Lim Meng Seah said the suspects, aged between 27 and 36, were detained last Monday and Tuesday with the help of Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) staff.
“The first suspect was caught stealing cables by SEB staff at Jalan Perlis in Kuala Baram on Monday and he was handed over to the police for further action.
“Following his arrest, two more suspects were detained at the same location,” he said, adding that the remaining three suspects were arrested on Tuesday.
Police also seized three hoes, two shovels, a Perodua Myvi car and a Toyota Ipsum from the suspects.
Lim said with the arrest of the six suspects, he was confident that the police could solve 15 cable theft cases reported in the district early this year.
“All the suspects have been remanded for four days to assist in the investigation under Section 431A of the Penal Code,” he told reporters during a press conference at Miri Central Police Station yesterday.
Meanwhile, SEB Northern Region Regional Manager Tan Joo Kok who was also present at the press conference said a total of 19 cable theft cases were reported in Miri alone this year and the losses incurred by SEB amounted to RM622,500.
