SIBU: The Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) showed its appreciation towards 50 media practitioners in Sibu and Sarikei for their good work and dedication by organising a Media Appreciation Night here last night.

Its general manager Datuk Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng said that the event was organised to foster better understanding and rapport between SMA and media practitioners.

“I recognise the vital role that the media plays in keeping the public informed about the policies and initiatives of the government.

“Therefore, through strong cooperation between SMA and our media partners, we believe that our responsibilities can be effectively conveyed to the public through media publications,” he said in his speech at the event at a hotel here last night (Oct 26).

Tiong thanked media practitioners and agencies who have consistently supported SMA in their reporting.

“We value each headline that highlights the development of the digital economy in Sarawak, and we sincerely appreciate your effort,” he said.

Meanwhile, on SMA’s role, Tiong said that it is tasked with leading, overseeing, and facilitating the development and implementation of communication, multimedia, and digital economy initiatives in Sarawak since 2018, as outlined in Clause 9 of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) Ordinance 2017.

“The Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) are the implementation arms for the Digital Government (DG), and non-DG projects respectively.

“SMA is the policy-making, monitoring, and enforcement agency in the overall scheme,” he added.
