SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council will be taking actions soon against licensed money lenders who put up illegal advertising paraphernalia, said its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King yesterday.

He revealed at the council’s meeting that the paraphernalia included big advertisement signboards, wall banners and banners which the money lenders had put up at their premises.

Tiong said, “They had not applied for the necessary licences required under the Money Lender Act and Local Authorities (Advertisements) By-Laws.

“Besides that, many have also not applied for business name signs for their premises.”

He added the council had also received numerous public complaints on the nuisance and littering caused by the money lenders when distributing their leaflets.

“In view of this, the council will work closely with the Resident Office as the authorised agency for the licensing of the money lenders under the Money Lenders Act 1951,” said Tiong.

He explained that the council would strictly enforce the requirements of the Advertisement By-Laws and Cleanliness By-laws to ensure the tidiness and cleanliness of Sibu town.
