SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has started pruning tree branches in its administrative area, especially in the town area for the safety of pedestrians and other road users.

Chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh, when contacted on Sunday (March 21) said the work will only be carried out on weekends to avoid the rush hours.

He said the height of the tree varies according to the species, size and location also makes the work quite difficult because it has to take into account the situation and conditions.

“Fully grown trees need to be trim to their ideal height for the safety of the public. For example, on Saturday (March 20) in Jalan Tuanku Osman, the height of the tree needs to be 35 feet, according to our architects and landscaping contractors,” he said.

“If the tree grows too high, the branches will be very long and easily broken when there are strong winds, especially during thunderstorms.”

Ting said, Jalan Tuanku Osman is located in the central business area with heavy traffic being one of the main roads in the city and work can only be done during weekends.

After completing the work at the road, he said that they would carry out maintenance work.

He said that the works will cover 33 trees along Jalan Tuanku Osman.

Recently, a car parked in the Sibu Town Square area was badly damaged due falling tree branch following a thunderstorm.
