KUCHING: The construction of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sri Samarahan is the key to solving the problem of overcrowding of students in the area.

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) P197 Kota Samarahan candidate, Datuk Rubiah Wang said this new school will split the number of students who are already overcrowded in the two existing schools.

“I have been determined and trying to solve the problem of overcrowding of students at SMK Muara Tuang and SMK Kota Samarahan which have received complaints all this time.

“Alhamdulillah, this SMK Sri Samarahan project has already been approved in 2018 and the construction process has already started,” she said when met by reporters while visiting the construction site of SMK Sri Samarahan yesterday.

According to her, this school would accommodate a total of 1,500 students from the Ilmu Village area and the village area covering Kampung Meranek up to Kampung Mata Parang.

Rubiah added that the school that she has been working on since 2016 has not only provided benefits and comfort to the students, but also to the parents.

“The school, which costs RM53.7 million, is located near Kampung Meranek and Kampung Empila and will have 47 classrooms.

“Parents in this area no longer need to worry about sending their children to the dormitory because this school is closer to their house and more comfortable,” she said.

Commenting further on SMK Muara Tuang, Rubiah said a total of RM72 million had been allocated for the school’s full replacement project.

“The project which is expected to start at the end of this year aims to rebuild or replace this old and dilapidated school building.

“This is to ensure that the students and teachers at this school can conduct learning sessions in safer and more conductive conditions,” she added.

In other developments, Rubiah also stated that the construction of SK Pengkalan Kuap which cost RM33 million has been fully completed and would be operational next year.
