Smoke from peat fires still visible

MIRI: Traces of smoke from the peat fires were still visible yesterday and the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings were expected to rise.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee secretariat chief major Ismail Mahedi said the Civil Defence Force (APM) drone unit is monitoring the situation for new development.

As at 3pm, the unit found that there was still   smoke due to the peat soil fire in Sector 1 near ILP Miri.

The monitoring was conducted at a radius of 800 metres to 1,200 metres and a height of 60 metres to 80 metres.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) continued to deploy its Bombardier CL-415 aircraft for the sixth day of operation to combat the peat soil fires in Kuala Baram yesterday.

The aircraft is able to scoop and drop a total of 6,000 litres of water on a single run and is able to refill its load in about 12 seconds in a body of water, which includes the open sea, rivers or lakes.

The aircraft dropped a total of 246,000 litres on two flights yesterday. Today, the aircraft will focus on water bombing in Sector 3.
