KOTA SAMARAHAN: The two temporary evacuation centres (PPS) at the Kota Samarahan Civic Centre and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Baru here are operating smoothly.

During a visit to the two centres today (Dec 25), Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said she was satisfied with the condition of the PPS, which houses flood victims from Kampung Tanjung Bundong Lot Phase 3, Kampung Plaie, Kampung Naie Baru and Kampung Baru here.

She said her visit to both centres served to witness the services provided by the federal government, especially through the Social Welfare Department (SWD).

“It seems that everything is going well and smoothly, and the victims housed in these PPS are satisfied that they are given enough food and that hygiene is also well taken care of.

“This is what we are hoping for, and God willing, they may go home today, and we expect more PPSs to be closed depending on the weather,” she told reporters.

Nancy was also pleased to see that despite some areas in Sarawak being affected by floods, the overall condition was less severe compared to the Peninsular, adding that the situation was able to be put under control in the state.

“It can be said that JKM is always ready to help victims of floods and disasters in every state.

“In some areas, we have sent aid since October because we expect all these (floods and disasters) to happen.

“Not only Sarawak, but the whole country, because we are afraid that when there is a flood, we cannot send aid in time, so everything has to be prepared early,” she added.

Meanwhile, Nancy also noted that counsellors will also be stationed at PPS to provide assistance to flood victims who are emotionally affected by the disaster.

“Our counsellors are always assigned to PPS to provide counselling services because there may be victims who cannot bear their emotions,” she said.
