KUCHING: More than 200 delegates from Sarawak, Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Japan, India and the United Kingdom are attending a two-day Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) Malaysia 2023 Conference here.

Minister for Transport Sarawak, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin commended the overwhelming response to the inaugural conference which began yesterday at Riverside Majestic Hotel.

He said the conference is an ideal platform for the sharing of knowledge and expertise, especially for those involved in the public transport industry.

“This conference will be beneficial to those involved in public transportation and it augurs well for Sarawak’s efforts to modernise the public transport network in the state,” he said when officiating at the conference.

He was impressed with the speakers’ line up, stating that it was a good indicator of the organisation’s reputation as an internationally recognised professional engineering institution that has been around since 1912, with IRSE Malaysia Section established in 2013.

He told the delegates that Sarawak was already embarking on the utilisation of zero-emission vehicles with the introduction of hydrogen-powered buses which are currently operating on trial.

“Having the conference in Sarawak this year is well timed to coincide with the state’s move to incorporate new technology in the public transportation sector, namely the development of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project.

“We hope this could create awareness of the career opportunities in railway signal, communication, and system engineering among the youth,” he added.
