KUCHING: The Dayak community has been assured that the state government is listening to their concerns particularly issues that affect them.

But Food Industries, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said the community must speak up and provide suggestions as well as solutions to the government.

“If you see something that is not to the advantage of our community, say it out. This does not mean that you are against the government or policy.

“However, you must be careful in expressing your opinions. If you are unable to do so, share your ideas with others,” he said when officiating at the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) New Year Thanksgiving Gathering 2023 on Saturday (Jan 28).

Dr Rundi pointed out that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) like SDNU play a crucial role as a platform of transformation for the Dayak community.

He assured that his ministry will play its role in supporting such NGOs, noting that unity among the community is very important.

“Even though I am not a member, I want to assist (the NGOs) as it is a platform for us to showcase to the world that we are united. We must stay united in order for us to show our leadership abilities thus gaining respect from others,” he said.

At the same time, he urged the Dayak community to continue being innovative and creative particularly in leadership, economy or social aspects.

He said the community members must respect one another especially the elderly as they have vast knowledge and experience.

“We cannot take unity for granted, so we must play our part in nurturing and protecting the peace and harmony that we have,” he added.

Also present was Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom who is also the SDNU president.
