KUCHING: Singapore is exploring collaborative opportunities with Sarawak in the areas of furniture manufacturing and industry development, said Singapore Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Education Chee Hong Tat. He revealed that the discussion with Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan was to promote Singaporean furniture manufacturing companies to buy quality timber from Sarawak.

“One specific area that we discussed was how to recreate opportunities for Singaporean furniture manufacturing companies to use quality timber from Sarawak, to manufacture the furniture here and to export the products to other markets,” he told reporters after a courtesy call on Awang Tengah, who is also Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development and Second Minister of Urban Development and Resources, at Wisma Sumber Alam here yesterday.

Chee said the furniture-related exhibition at Suntec City in Singapore early September would create business opportunities for Singaporean companies to manufacture their products in Sarawak.

“We do have good furniture companies in Singapore, and they have their own designs and brands. They design and manufacture their own products. “Currently they do this in China and some in Vietnam. But they haven’t had a chance to come to Sarawak yet. “So, we hope we can bring some of the furniture companies and distributors here to explore more business opportunities,” he added.
