KUCHING: St Joseph’s Private Secondary School (SJPSS) choir has emerged as champion in the youth category of the Busan Choral Festival and Competition (BCFC 2021).

SJPSS said the winning entry – the popular children’s song ‘Ikan Kekek’– was arranged by Dr Tracy Wong.

The BCFC 2021 was held from Oct 21 to 24 and attracted 21 teams from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and South Korea.

“The panel of jury included Anton Armstrong (USA), Soon-Jung Kim (South Korea), Yu-Chung John Ku (Taiwan), Ki-Sun Lee (South Korea) and Zoltan Pad (Hungary).

“In South Korea, this event was held at the Geumjeong Cultural Centre and the Busan Cinema Centre while participants from other countries participated via online platforms.

“Upon hearing the good news, Tracy, who is an assistant professor and choral director at McMaster University in Canada, immediately sent her congratulations to choir conductor Benedict Lo,” SJPSS said on Wednesday (Oct 27).

“Under the guidance and support from both Benedict and Ivy Elmira as well as the teachers in charge, choir members put together a superb performance.

“Their performance was complemented by simple yet meaningful choreography depicting the culture of fishermen in Malaysia.

“The joy and sense of achievement from this international competition has greatly motivated and inspired choir members to continue to work hard and strive for greater success.”
